Forced, sometimes puerile humor and cliche roles give these essays a cynical view of married life. Definitely earns the title "petty."
Actually pretty boring - can see why this style of pretentious writing went out of fashion. I have slogged through it for insight into the era, but the going was painful.
I couldn't get into it. It was slow did not hold my interest.
Interesting story about a young married couple. Appropriate for modern marriage. Shows the anachronism of the institution of marriage especially now.
Old world charm and situational humor best understood in the bonds of loving marriage. One does well to enjoy and practice.
Balzac lived and wrote his books in the 19 th century, but marriage is always the same. And it's wonderful to enjoy the adventures of this couple, Adolphe and Caroline, in the exciting enterprise that marriage is about.
